We are pleased to welcome Ms. Anitra Lawson to OC. Anitra is an MFA graduate of CalArts and brings a wealth of industry and teaching experience to our Film, Television and Electronic Media (FTVE) program.
Anitra Lawson hails from the Midwest –– a native of Wichita, Kansas. She has a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Film Directing from the California Institute of the Arts. She completed her undergraduate studies at Florida A&M University where she double majored in Theatre Performance and Broadcast Journalism. Anitra is the recipient of a Television Academy Foundation Fellowship, Hollywood Foreign Press Association scholarship, Norman Lear: Women in Film scholarship, and other industry honors.
Anitra has written, directed and produced several projects including her own short film A Perfect Chaos, which addresses the ”down-low” phenomenon and its impacts on the black family. The film screened at the Pan African Film Festival and aired on BET’s The Best Shorts. She has interned with the Academy of Television, Arts and Sciences, and on the Emmy Award-winning show The West Wing. She served for three years as Creative Director for Victory Church broadcast content on the TCT channel on DIRECTV. For the past seven years, Anitra was a Film/Video professor at El Camino College – Compton Center teaching production and theory courses and developing the Film/Video program. Anitra is currently developing a docu-series entitled OnMission, which explores the “inherent good in people of all cultures and ethnicities.”
Anitra is a proud wife to basketball coach Ralph Lawson, two awesome step-children, Marquis and Destini, and a spunky first-grade boy, Malachi Lawson. Anitra believes that life is the best teacher and she endeavors to find harmony in balancing art, education, marriage and motherhood. She is so excited and honored to be a part of the Oxnard Family!
Ms. Anitra Lawson, a 2017 Television Academy Foundation Faculty Fellow, is a recent full-time faculty hire in our Visual Performing Arts Department. She will lead OC’s Film, Television and Electronic Media (FTVE) Program.
